Tweedy: The W in WBA – Women or Woke?

In recent weeks we’ve seen outrage over the latest controversy to come out of the WNBA.

The transgender controversy is just the latest symptom of the woke cancer infecting professional sports

Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever made comments against transgendered women (biological men) being able to play in the WNBA. That resulted in Cunningham being brutally fouled in a game and has set off debates across political and media platforms.

The player who committed the foul and was ejected from the game, DiJonai Carrington, of the Chicago Sky, later tweeted, not an apology, but the words “white privilege”.

To those who have not been following these issues in professional sports, all of this may come as a surprise; but, It is just the latest example of a woke cancer infecting professional sports. Transgender, race, immigration, political correctness, you name it – we’ve seen sports become more about identity and virtue signaling than wins and losses.

Cunningham likely was fouled in retaliation over her comments against transgendered players.

I say likely, because the tweet that Carrington posted after her ejection – was about RACE and Cunningham, who is white, has been the subject of racial attacks along and her famous teammate Caitlin Clark.

The attacks on Clark have made news since she first joined the league despite her enormous accomplishments as a college basketball player and contributions to the WNBA. Cunningham has come to Clark’s defense on and off the court.

Merit aside, it’s becoming known that if you are white and straight in the WNBA you might as well have a bullseye on your back.  Meanwhile, the WNBA has done little about it.

Professional sports have allowed these issues to infect their sports. Instead of being about the game. The so called “leaders” of these leagues have damaged their brands by allowing politics to infiltrate what should only be about one’s ability to play a sport.

It’s gotten so extreme that we now have the WNBA supporting transgendered women playing in their league- aka, men playing in women’s sports.

That hits the WNBA differently than any other league.

For years, women fought to have a professional league of their own, and it’s only recently that this league has become profitable. Now we have the most famous player of the WNBA, Caitlin Clark, being fouled over her race and Cunningham being attacked for saying the league known as the Women’s NBA (WNBA) should be for biological women only – i.e. for protecting women’s sports.

That is the destruction that the cancer of wokeism brings.

At a time when the WNBA should be celebrating its level of play, and how the league is finally able to stand on its own, they are bogged down in controversy.

There’s a reason that there is a W in front of NBA. I always thought it was supposed to be for Women, but apparently it’s for Woke.

The fact that transgender players is an issue only in the WNBA speaks volumes.

Do you hear the NBA talking about transgender men/biological women being able to join their ranks?  No, you don’t.

The reason you don’t see transgendered men trying to join the NBA, nor even a discussion of such, is that transgendered men, who are biologically women, can’t compete with the men in the NBA.

Men and women are biologically different.  Who knew?

Wokism, however, doesn’t exist inside truth.

Once again, that is where facts come in and destroy the virtue signaling woke ideology.

Consider this: Cunningham grew up on a farm, in a middle-class Missouri family, not from any wealth or “privilege.”

On the other hand, Carrington is the daughter of a former NFL player, grew up in San Diego and attended a private high school where the tuition was $20k+ a year.  She then got a full ride to Stanford.  So, who was privileged?

According to woke doctrine, Cunningham is white, straight and Christian which makes her bad and, in the WNBA, that is doctrine.

As for Carrington, she is black and a lesbian so she is automatically the victim, even though, for someone who seems to have issues with white girls, she has no problem dying her hair to try to look like one.

It seems as if the WNBA wallows in and promotes victimhood in its ranks regardless of truth. The league is willing to put its own women second to defend biological men who are parading as women in their effort to be politically correct over all else.

Worse yet, in a meeting over the matter, the league couldn’t even come up with a definition of a woman! Yes, you heard that right – the WNBA, the Women’s National Basketball Association, can’t define a woman!

Wait, there is more.  The WNBA is the most liberal of all professional sports leagues.

In 2026, a study by VoteHub analyzed public voter registration files across 24 states and Washington, D.C., revealing political party affiliation of professional athletes across major U.S. sports leagues. The following were the results of this study:

WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association)

Democrat: 67.5%

Independent/Other: 30.2%

Republican: 2.3%

NBA (National Basketball Association)

Independent/Other: 45.9%

Democrat: 42.9%

Republican: 10.0%

NFL (National Football League)

Independent/Other: 44.3%

Democrat: 34.3%

Republican: 20.2%

NHL (National Hockey League)

Independent/Other: 48.6%

Republican: 43.9%

Democrat: 5.6%

MLB (Major League Baseball)

Republican: 53.7%

Independent/Other: 36.4%

Democrat: 7.8%

Apparently, the higher the rate of Democrats in a league, the more politics you see being infused into the sport.

The WNBA, NBA and even the NFL have been playing the woke virtue signaling game the last decade or more, whereas while other leagues, such as MLB, still have the push within to wear pride hats and have “End Racism” events, they are kept to a minimum.

While race has been the core of much of the “woke” activities in these leagues, transgenderism is just the new woke cause that these leagues want to push down the throat of Americans – even when it means undermining their viewership.

As long as wokeism continues to infect sports and other forms of entertainment, we will continue to deal with these issues which only get more ridiculous with time.

As for Cunningham, she’s a minority in her own league and I am not talking about race. Standing up for biological women in a women’s professional basketball league makes her not only a minority in her sport, but, worse a target – and that is a sad state of affairs.
